What’s a Malibu treatment for hair?

We live in an area where there is hard water, chances are you’ve noticed that your hair isn’t in the best of shape. This is because minerals such as rust and chlorine build up in your hair, leaving it feeling dry, coarse and dirty. This excess buildup can also cause blondes to take on a brassy hue in their tresses. ( not to be confused with not lightning the hair past that brassy state) A good way to remove this buildup and start with a clean slate is by getting a Malibu hair treatment.

Basics of this treatment

A Malibu hair treatment is usually done at a salon. The best way to get the most effective Malibu treatment is by visiting your stylist.

A packet of Malibu hair treatment consists of granules referred to as a “crystal gel.” They are mixed with filtered water and applied onto the hair. It must process under a heated hood dryer 15-40 minutes. Make sure that you have at least an hour to spare before getting a Malibu treatment, depending on the length and thickness of your hair, processing times and price can vary. It will cost 15 dollars while already getting a chemical service and alone by itself will cost 35 dollars.

The Malibu treatment typically will remove excess buildup in your hair caused from hard water, chlorine from swimming in a pool, water softeners, an old house with old copper plumbing pipes, and even medication. Hard water often contains calcium and iron, which is what makes lighter hair take on a dull darker and/or coppery or brassy hue. If you use a pool frequently, chlorine and copper can build up in your hair, also causing damage. Copper is what causes light hair to take on a greenish cast. A Malibu treatment will effectively remove this buildup.

A Malibu treatment is highly recommended before any chemical services. It will prevent any chemical reactions with the buildup in the hair and give better even product absorption results. Imagine your hair is a ladder and all the empty spaces are randomly filled in with pool water build up. When a chemical service needs to be done it will not be able to fill those spaces because some spaces are already taken. Therefore leaving the hair unevenly processed with uneven results. After a Malibu everything will be evenly absorbed.

See my doodle below.

The green(icky pool water build up) takes up much of the hairs space leaving little and uneven spaces for the red (pretend it’s hair color molecules) to evenly absorb.

At home care

We don’t recommend doing many of these treatments at home. If you have colored hair, it will remove some of your color molecules leaving your hair color looking faded. You will not like those results.

There are at home daily shampoo and conditioners that can prevent buildup safely without removing and fading your hair color. You can also choose to have these treatments done properly in the salon before getting a chemical service to assure a better end result.

If you need to book a Malibu treatment click on Malibu after this link. It’s located in the haircare section of the menu. Be sure to book it as an add on to chemical service or regular price.

The treatment without a chemical service will be on sale the month of May 2019 for 25.00 dollars. It is an added 15 dollars if you need it done when your scheduled for a chemical service.
